The Farmers to Families Food Box Program is a concept initialized by the USDA and approved by Congress (in a bi-partisan move!) to unite farmers with milk needing to be processed (and not dumped) with hungry people! The 317 million dollars in dairy products, processed by companies standing more or less idle with schools shut down and restaurants closed, put food in the hands of hungry people nationwide! BRAVO!!!
The leader in applicants from states across the country was Wisconsin (>4,000 applicants) followed by New York, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. Meat, fruits, vegetables and nuts were included in the program and the boxes delivered to consumers. Initially, producers agreed to accept only 80% of the value of their products. So, they get paid, people are kept working and people are kept healthy and well!
The United States Department of Agriculture, supported by bi-partisan efforts of Congress, is to be applauded for this initiative! The right action, the right energy and the right time!! We can do this. We can get through this. There is an old “saying” – ‘Where there is a will; there is a way’. Clearly!
